Since WPA seemed to disagree with my opinion that china and USA/west are moving closer towards parity when it comes to mass surveillance and censorship etc, I'll post some links to back up my point and explain what I'm talking about.
See the recent New Zealand shooting? All websites basically banned and censored the video. Reddit shutdown a fuckton of subreddits purely so they aren't seen as promoting "extremist views", and everyone is basically self censoring opinions they had just because of 50 people dying.
Isn't free speech supposed to protect the worst of the worst? Why censor reality? Are we going to trade liberty and free speech for security? Like censoring the video and other unpopular views? How is this any different to china? It's only gonna get worse in the west with all the fake news shit and paid trolls and propaganda/misinformation campaigns. We went into wars due to false lies and propaganda, of course we need to control this shit or else anyone with nefarious think tank groups can just put some study out and then the govs who created those think tanks can just use that to justify whatever they want to do, like invasions and wars or sanctions which fuck over whole countries.
It's a complex topic, and I don't think there's any easy answers. The best action(just like best gov) would probably be an educated benevolent group in charge running the show, since I don't think democratic tools like reputation systems or voting can handle it properly, it's too easy to influence mass public and get knee jerk reactions which then spin out of control.
Like in china they censor even pro china shit since they don't want the people going to burn down USA or Japanese embassies or companies n shit when something bad happens, like USA bombing Chinese embassy in Belgrade by "accident" or when china Japan has falling out due to territorial issues like diaoyu/senkakku island dispute. It's not worth going to war with Japan or ruining sino-jap relations due to some rocks in the sea, same as Taiwan even. China can take them by force anytime they want, no one could do anything, even USA unless they want USA to be radioactive wasteland and also plunge the world into nuclear winter.
But I digress. Here

It's not just NZ but also Aus and not just gov/laws, but websites like reddit and Facebook and all that are all going with the flow in name of security.
Same shit as 9-11 and patriot act. That NZ terrorist definitely did his homework and basically like Osama and al Qaeda, they won when we give up our freedoms for security. But it seems like public acceptance is moving towards censorship and "security" rather than protecting undesirable free speech, or rather just free speech since that's what free speech means.
How aren't we sliding more and more towards censorship and mass surveillance "china style"?
What happened to freedom of speech we all loved so much?
Is free speech more important than security? Is ability to do propaganda more important than security? There's no easy answers and we all have to draw the line somewhere.
But the fact of the matter is we aren't even having this Conversation and our politicians and companies are just doing knee jerk censorship and normalising mass surveillance and censorship without any input from the people who elected them

How is this different from china? Did our gov ask us before they spied on all of us and record all our shit? They are banning encryption and making it illegal in Aus, how is this diff from china arresting you if you use VPN to get around their laws/rules? You think if majority of us were against this(and we are), the gov would care and stop doing it? Lol.

Bbc seems to think it's "different from the same laws in china/Russia/turkey", but of course they would, they are gov funded and U.K. Gov would also love to do this shit if they aren't already(behind the scenes, they would live to do it with full weight of law behind them though). Explain to me how the law is different though, rather than just saying "our gov is good so we can do it but china is bad so they are diff when they do it"?
Seems like we in the west have all resigned ourselves to our fates, no one seems to care about mass surveillance or censorship of undesirables. But when you become the undesirable, that's gonna be too late already.
