Probably doesn't deserve it's own thread, but what the hell, it's too quiet and i want as much eyes seeing this as possible.
Anyhow, just a heads up if anyone is considering upgrading.
I was using old firefox and had to upgrade, but they didn't tell me that it was going from flash to HTML5.
Normally that wouldn't be a problem, and i'm guessing it won't be for many of you guys(with your supercomputers n shit), but if you have an older comp, i suggest staying away from HTML5, or at least when it comes to playing shit on YouTube. HTML5 uses much more resources than flash currently, or at least for me, and i think that it's probably because it's not optimised properly yet, since flash has had years of updates n feedback n shit, whereas not everyone even has a browser that supports HTML5 yet.
So yeah. If you do upgrade and you find it sucking, i suggest you get the firefox addon like me, that lets you use flash instead of HTML5. Here's the addon i'm using
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...-video-player/
I suggest you guys check out that users other addons, because they are all great if you use firefox/youtube. I use like 3-4 just from him, and they include youtube high definition(automatically plays every video at 720p, or whatever you set it as, and it also auto pauses every video instead of auto playing it for me, and you can do other settings i guess, but that's what i use it for), youtube video replay(for automatic replay of music videos etc, this just adds a button on YT video page, underneath the video itself and should be on the right of the subscribe button. And yeah, this addon too obviously.
Also, like i mentioned in the other thread, HTML full screening takes YEARS compared to flash, even after i edited the settings in about:config, and this has nothing to do with my comp being old/slow etc, but the settings itself. However, even changing the timer to 0 0, it's still got a delay, whereas flash didn't..
OK, other than that shit, what's the actual debate atm concerning Flash vs HTML5? what's the pros and cons etc? Anyone got any good links that gives a laymans explanation(with technical shit too if we want to dig deeper and understand all the mechanics n shit behind it..), or can someone give a laymans explanation themselves, or give us your own anecdotal 'evidence' or share your own experiences with using HTML5 like i did above..?
So yeah. Let us know when you upgraded to HTML5, when you did it, and what your experience of it has been so far. IE any driver errors/conflicts, any speed difference(faster/slower), any change in stability(crashes more/less), and anything else you feel that's worth sharing with us.
FOR ME, it actually used enough resources to make my comp/video card overheat and crash/shut down, basically making youtube unwatchable, so i didn't even have the luxury of being able to choose to use it.. after watching like 5-10 minutes, my comp would just overheat and shut down.. heh. But yeah, don't worry, that happened only because my video card has been fucked for years now, the fan has stopped, and it overheats easily(i'm using an external fan to cool down my box.. just took case off and aimed it at the M/B video card heh). But yeah, at least this lets me know that HTML5 is u sing more of my video card and more resources than FLASH, AND it also made my comp slower.. or at least for the moment until they 'optimize' HTML5, if ever.
The above reason is also stopping me from playing more resource intensive games.. like if the minimum sys req/specs are exactly what i have, then i can be sure that i won't be able to run it, because maxing out my system resources just = overheat = shut down. Anything that stresses out my video card = overheat = shut down. I'm just waiting for something else to fuck up that forces me to upgrade my comp, and by upgrade, i mean basically new comp itself, keeping the mouse/case/kb only heh. So far my monitor, and the fan on the video card is fux0red, otherwise still ok.
If you have any questions or anything, just holla. If you've had experience with HTML5, just holla and share too.
Thanks guys!
EDIT: here's some links you guys may find interesting/useful
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compar...TML5_and_Flash
http://www.dacast.com/blog/what-is-t...ideo-vs-flash/ <--has a nice chart that shows the differences
But yeah. From what i've skimmed through, it seems the main benefit of HTML5 is that it uses less battery life on mobiles n shit or something, doesn't require installing a 3rd party 'player' like flash, and that it allows 'semantic markup'(which i guess has something to do with a fundamental improvement to the Hyper Text Mark Up, aka HTML). Anyhow, read the chart in the link for more.
If someone reads the link above to 'semantic markup' and actually understands it, please post and explain it to us plebs.. heh
But yeah, just let me/us know what your personal experience with it all is, and i'm curious to know when you guys think flash will die(or at least from the people who know the 'scene'/industry etc), if ever, and/or when HTML5 will overtake flash in terms of % of users n shit(if ever). HTML5 has been touted as the next big thing by IT experts n shit for ages now(or at least a few years, which in IT industry IS ages), but it still hasn't happened yet. I'm guessing that it's similar to IP6 vs IP4? In that everyone knows that we'll have to go ip6 and that ip4 is obsolete or will be sooner or later, but we're all lazy fucks and don't see the need to change if we don't HAVE TO. Also, developers n shit are still making shit for flash, since like i said, the adoption rate for HTML5 is pitiful compared to flash at the moment. It's kinda like a feedback loop n shit, which i'm not sure if they will be able to get out of, but yeah. I guess if you give it enough time, logic should prevail.. unless money is involved, like in the VHS vs Betamax case where VHS prevailed even though it was shitter.. haha
