The mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio are horrific tragedies. In the case of the El Paso shooting, the suspected terrorist gunman appears to have been inspired by the forum website known as 8chan. Based on evidence we've seen, it appears that he posted a screed to the site immediately before beginning his terrifying attack on the El Paso Walmart killing 20 people.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Nearly the same thing happened on 8chan before the terror attack in Christchurch, New Zealand. The El Paso shooter specifically referenced the Christchurch incident and appears to have been inspired by the largely unmoderated discussions on 8chan which glorified the previous massacre. In a separate tragedy, the suspected killer in the Poway, California synagogue shooting also posted a hate-filled ?open letter? on 8chan. 8chan has repeatedly proven itself to be a cesspool of hate.
8chan is among the more than 19 million Internet properties that use Cloudflare's service. We just sent notice that we are terminating 8chan as a customer effective at midnight tonight Pacific Time. The rationale is simple: they have proven themselves to be lawless and that lawlessness has caused multiple tragic deaths. Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit.
We do not take this decision lightly. Cloudflare is a network provider. In pursuit of our goal of helping build a better internet, we?ve considered it important to provide our security services broadly to make sure as many users as possible are secure, and thereby making cyberattacks less attractive ? regardless of the content of those websites. Many of our customers run platforms of their own on top of our network. If our policies are more conservative than theirs it effectively undercuts their ability to run their services and set their own policies. We reluctantly tolerate content that we find reprehensible, but we draw the line at platforms that have demonstrated they directly inspire tragic events and are lawless by design. 8chan has crossed that line. It will therefore no longer be allowed to use our services.
First and foremost. Mass shooters manifestos that they upload before they go on killing spree. Do you agree it should be censored? I'm guessing yes? Because I'm leaning towards yes. How can you defend it except on stubborn principle alone? There's no negatives to ban just proven killers manifestos in order to take away incentive for any future copycats who seek to disseminate and spread their hate filled ideology and gain personal fame..
@bolded, multiple separate cases of mass shooters being inspired and using the site to disseminate and spread their hate ideology. Seriously, if we can ban evil cults and take kids away from parents who we declare to not be adequate parents, I don't see why we can't stop shit that obviously leads to harmful/negative/unwanted outcomes for society.
Do you agree with cloudflares decision? Or should sites like 8chan and storefront be left up and paraded as virtues of free speech? Do we have to wait for actual murders to take place before we can do anything? Why leave up a cesspool of hate which allows it to circle jerk each other and g each other on until one day one of them snaps or some new idiot comes and takes it "seriously"? How do we know if they are joking about doing a terrorist attack?
Should we allow "jokes" or condone hate speech and threats? Like if trump "jokes" a machine gun is a good way to deal with immigrants, why is that allowed, but then why can't citizens make jokes about how a good way to deal with trump is with machine gun etc too? We'd go straight into jail for that as a threat, no?
Most western countries have no problem with banning organisations promoting hate speech or evil religious cults n shit. Only USA has such notion of free speech which even protects hate speech.
I'm curious to see if you will defend trump and sites like 8ch and stormfront in light of the recent back to back mass shootings(not counting the daily nonstop mass shootings in poor, predominantly black neighbourhoods).
It's just like I told WPA, the west and china are gonna move closer in line when it comes to censorship. Only USA is that stubborn and says guns are freedom and hate speech is free speech even after it produces mass shooting after mass shooting and fucked up political culture/discourse controlled and hijacked by moneyed interests with no loyalty toward the common people.
So do you support this, why/why not? Discuss. Just for the record, I haven't stated my own opinion yet, I'm still thinking about it and wanna see what you guys think and your arguments.
